Similar Cams uses cookies and local storage for essential site functionality and — only after you give explicit consent on first visit — for first-party product analytics that help us understand which categories and providers are actually useful. We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting cookies, or cross-site tracking cookies. The full data picture lives in our Privacy Policy; this page focuses on the technical details.

1. What are cookies and local storage

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by the websites you visit. Local storage is a similar mechanism that stores data in your browser without sending it to the server on every request. We use both, and we explain each entry below.

2. Essential cookies and storage entries we set

• age_verified (cookie) — set after you confirm being 18+ via the age-gate. Persistent for one year. Stops the age-gate from re-appearing on every page load.
• visitor (cookie) — anonymous server-side session identifier (random UUID). Used to remember theme, language, favorites, push-notification preferences, and aggregate visitor country during a session.
• analytics_consent (cookie) — records your answer to the consent banner (granted or denied). Persistent for one year so we don't ask you again on every visit.
• Theme preference (local storage) — your selected light/dark theme.
• Push subscription state (local storage) — set if you opt in to web push notifications, so the browser remembers which models or topics you subscribed to.

None of these entries contain personally identifying information, and none are shared with third parties.

3. Cookieless analytics (always on, no cookies set)

We load Ahrefs Web Analytics on every visit. It is a privacy-first traffic counter that does not set cookies, does not write to local storage, and does not create any persistent identifier on your device — so there are no entries to list in the table above. It records aggregate page views, referring sources, and approximate country-level geography to inform editorial and SEO decisions. Because it processes no personal data and creates no on-device storage, it loads outside the consent banner. Full details are in the Privacy Policy §3.1.

4. Optional analytics cookies and storage (only if you accept)

If you click "Accept" on the consent banner, we load two privacy-respecting product-analytics tools — Mixpanel (EU region, ingested via api-eu.mixpanel.com) and Google Analytics 4 — and the following entries appear:

• mp_* (local storage entries) — Mixpanel's persistent device identifier ($device_id), queue of pending events, and session-replay state. Persistent until you clear browser storage or click "Decline" after a previous accept.
• _ga (cookie) — Google Analytics' visitor identifier. Persistent for 2 years. Used to distinguish unique browsers across sessions.
• _ga_<measurement_id> (cookie) — Google Analytics' session-state container, e.g. _ga_4S7NWKFV2P. Persistent for 2 years. Used to maintain session continuity within the GA property.

If you click "Decline", neither the Mixpanel SDK nor the Google Analytics loader (gtag.js) is ever loaded, no mp_* or _ga* entries are written, and no analytics network requests are made.

What is recorded when consent is granted: page views, internal navigation events, outbound clicks to Providers, age-gate confirmation, and basic device context (browser, operating system, screen size, referring URL). With your consent we additionally enable Mixpanel's autocapture (automatic clicks on links and buttons, form submissions, scroll depth) and session replay (anonymised DOM snapshots plus mouse, scroll and click activity, used only to debug UX issues). All input fields — <input>, <select>, <textarea> and [contenteditable] — are masked client-side before any data leaves your browser, so anything you type (names, emails, search queries, passwords) is never captured. Each event is associated with the same anonymous visitor session UUID we already use server-side. Both Mixpanel and Google Analytics 4 are configured to anonymise IP addresses; we never store the raw IP alongside individual events.

5. What we never set

• No advertising or retargeting cookies (Google Ads, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, etc.);
• No cross-site tracking identifiers, no fingerprinting beyond the device-level identifier described above;
• No product-analytics tags (Mixpanel, GA4) before you accept the consent banner.

6. Third-party cookies on outbound clicks

When you click an outbound link to a Provider you leave Similar Cams. The destination Provider operates its own cookies, analytics, and ad tech. We have no control over what they set on their domain. Please review the Provider's cookie policy if this matters to you.

7. Managing your cookies and changing your mind

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Specifically:

• To withdraw analytics consent after granting it, clear the analytics_consent cookie and any mp_* local-storage entries — the consent banner will reappear on your next visit.
• Blocking the visitor cookie will reset preferences (theme, language, notifications) on every visit.
• Clearing age_verified will cause the age-gate to reappear.

The Site continues to function in all of the above cases.

8. Changes to this policy

If we ever introduce additional cookies or new analytics providers we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above before the change takes effect. Material changes that introduce new third parties (for example Google Analytics 4) will also retrigger the consent banner so existing visitors get a fresh chance to accept or decline.
